Happy New Year, Everybody!
Despite foreboding feelings and much queasiness over our broken, accelerating world, hurtling towards who knows what treacherous curves, I am resolved to 1) go see “Ferrari” at the first opportunity, and 2) have a good year, somehow, some way! Music is really important at all times, and certainly so in unsettled ones. I intend to be making some in the best way I can, and as often an as much as possible.
Today I’m on my way to New Orleans, one of our maximum cradles of Black music, for the Jazz Education Network Conference. I will be performing there on Friday afternoon in the company of my students in the Frost School Of Music’s Stamps Jazz Quintet, playing a program of my originals along with work by New Orleans royalty (and revered colleague) Donald Harrison and Stamps band members. These young folks are playing their behinds off, and this will be a hot one!
I’m also giving a presentation at JEN later the same day on my soon to be released “Comprehensive Method For The Improvising Trumpeter”, something I’ve been working on for a long, long time. Some of my students, both alumni and present, will be helping demonstrate various facets of this method, based on my own practice and teaching materials and seeking to establish a new paradigm for serious trumpet study. Trumpeters, you’ll be hearing more about this soon! I believe I have something pretty damn cool happening with this.
JEN kicks off 2024 with a Big Easy bang, but more good stuff is coming on its heels as I settle into the new year. New album out in spring – my 7x7by7 project is finally getting dropped! Here’s a sneak preview:
I’m going to jump on some new recording projects just as soon as I can after this new release and keep those tunes coming!
More soon (yes, you’ve heard that before. Let’s see if I follow through this time)- I have some deep things in the works that I’m looking forward to pulling your coat to. Meanwhile, here’s some dates in the books for the first few months of the year – hope to see you at one!
