About
Brian Lynch’s 7x7By7 Project
“Hearing the trumpet of Brian Lynch is listening to one of the special sounds in jazz…The music is spirited and engaging, consistently interesting, and made more significant when the listener is made aware of what Lynch was specifically referencing as he composed each piece.”
JOE LANG, Jersey Jazz
“These musicians attack Lynch’s compositions with sensitivity and conviction, displaying a cohesion that could only be achieved by a steady working band… To my mind, this is the year’s solidest record so far — hard work, not luck, has everything to do with its considerable pleasures.” BROOKS GEIKEN, artsdfuse.org
“…the band has an immediately identifiable sound and personality…when it comes to solos, each player is strong and individual.” ALYN SHIPTON, Jazzwise Magazine (Editor’s Choice/4 Stars)
“…exceptional jazz, by a trusted veteran, still pushing himself to new conceptual horizons.” MORGAN ENOS, ukjazznews.com
“…the music itself is pure joy: straight-ahead jazz with tight unison playing, a hard-bop edge, touches of Latin flair, and knockout solos from everyone in the band.”
TIM LARSEN, jazzviews.net
“…these tracks pack drama and surprise…a sharp album.” Downbeat Magazine
Conceived during the time of the pandemic, the music on Multi-GRAMMY Award Winner Brian Lynch’s album 7x7by7 (7 times 7 by 7) can be justifiably called a septology: seven pieces performed by seven musicians with each track clocking in at exactly the same length, seven minutes flat of music. Brian designed the project in a novel and distinctive modular format, allowing the potential interchange of ensemble sections and individual parts across all seven compositions. The recording process was also designed to facilitate the reassembly of elements from the tracks into new pieces. Shaped by these attributes and their constraints, the music of 7x7by7 has the potential for endless variations!
Another layer of sevens is revealed in the titles of this album. From his twenty-first (7×3) through his sixty-third (7×9) year, each seven-year signpost in Lynch’s eventful life is memorialized in the title of each of the seven tracks.
The performing version of the 7x7By7 music, played by Brian Lynch’s longtime working group Spheres Of Influence, opens up the music to its full potential, displaying the mettle of Lynch and his estimable ensemble. A multimedia presentation accompanying the music in concert provides additional context for the audience by illustrating Lynch’s long and distinguished career in music, presented in seven-year groupings, accompanying each composition.
