BRIAN LYNCH WINS TWO 2017 JAZZ JOURNALIST ASSOCIATION AWARDS

Saturday, May 20th, 2017

BRIAN LYNCH WINS TWO 2017 JAZZ JOURNALIST ASSOCIATION AWARDS (JJA):

* TRUMPETER OF THE YEAR* *RECORD OF THE YEAR*

Trumpeter Brian Lynch and Hollistic MusicWorks are proud to announce their double success in the 2017 Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Awards, the winners of whom were announced on May 17th by the JJA. Lynch has been named Trumpeter Of The Year by the association, and his latest recording, the Grammy© Award nominated Madera Latino: A Latin Jazz Interpretation On The Music Of Woody Shaw was named Record Of The Year.

Winners of the 21st Annual Jazz Awards, celebrating 41 categories of excellence in music and music journalism, were determined by the two-stage voting of full JJA members — writers, broadcasters, photographers, videographers and other media professionals engaged in disseminating news and views of jazz.

Lynch stated after hearing the news of his awards: “I’m elated over this signal recognition of my work as a performer and recording artist by this prestigious organization. To receive a JJA Jazz Award is to be conferred a distinct and coveted honor. To receive two in the same year is almost beyond belief! I would like to dedicate these awards to the living and growing legacy of the great Black American musical genius Woody Shaw, whose time is coming closer every day as more musicians and listeners recognize the vital importance of his work to the continuation of this art; and to all independent artists like myself everywhere – as someone who many of us are missing very much right now once said, ‘yes we can!’”

JJA Record Of The Year Madera Latino explores the music of jazz innovator and master trumpeter Woody Shaw, a main influence on Lynch’s work as player and composer, through the lens of authentic Afro-Caribbean rhythm, framed by the loving treatment of his compositions in virtuosic Latin Jazz style by Lynch. It is also a heartfelt tribute to the genius of Shaw by a all star lineup of today’s top trumpeters: Lynch, Sean Jones, Dave Douglas, Diego Urcola, Michael Rodriguez, Etienne Charles, Josh Evans, and Philip Dizack, along with a truly mighty Latin Jazz rhythm section: percussionists Pedrito Martinez and Little Johnny Rivero, bassist Luques Curtis (all three integral to the success of Lynch’s 2006 CD Simpático, a Grammy@ Award winner in the Latin Jazz category), along with drummer Obed Calvaire, percussionist Anthony Carrillo, and pianist Zaccai Curtis.

As a jazz trumpet star, Lynch’s career over the span of more than 35 years has been a notable one, dating back to long tenures with the Horace Silver Quintet and Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in the 1980s and early 1990’s and leading to epic collaborations straddling each side of the millennium with Latin/ Latin Jazz icon Eddie Palmieri and alto sax legend Phil Woods. Other artists in the jazz, Latin, and allied music fields that he has had significant associations with include Benny Golson, Hector LaVoe, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Lila Downs, Charles McPherson, and Prince, among countless others. Throughout his career, Lynch has led his own bands, touring the US, Europe and Japan since the 1980s, and has also co-led ensembles with colleagues such as trombonist Conrad Herwig (notable for the Latin Side series of recordings).

After 17 albums as a leader on the Criss Cross, Sharp Nine, Ken, EWE, Z’oot Jazz, Nagel Heyer and Artist Share labels, Lynch established his own label, Hollistic MusicWorks, in 2010. Notable releases on HMW besides Madera Latino include his Downbeat 5 star rated Unsung Heroes series (201013) legendary drummer Killer Ray Appleton’s Naptown Legacy (2013) and Questioned Answer, a co-led project with rising piano star Emmet Cohen (2014). Hollistic MusicWorks’ new and upcoming releases for the balance of 2017 include pianist Rob Schneiderman’s Tone Twister, with Lynch, Ralph Moore, Gerald Cannon and Pete Van Nostrand; trumpeter Jared Hall’s Hallways, the first release in HMW’s Mentor Series showcasing emerging artists; and Lynch’s own Songbook Vol. 1, featuring Jim Snidero, Orrin Evans, Boris Kozlov, and Donald Edwards. For more information about Hollistic MusicWorks, see the label website at http://hollisticmusicworks.com.

Lynch is also active as an educator and is Professor Of Studio Music And Jazz at The Frost School Of Music, The University Of Miami. Other educational associations include Artist In Residence for the Wisconsin Conservatory Of Music’s Jazz Institute, and Artist In Residence and Director for Ensamble Tonica, Fundacion Tonica GDL, Guadalajara, Mexico.

Brian Lynch is a Yamaha Performing Artist and endorses Austin Custom Brass mouthpieces as well as the Lefreque Sound Bridge.

Madera Latino Nominated For Grammy!

Monday, December 12th, 2016

digital-front-cover-sq-med-quality

Hi Everyone,

The past week brought some great news for me and the Hollistic MusicWorks label – my “Madera Latino” project, celebrating the music of the great Woody Shaw through a Latin Jazz lens and featuring some of today’s top jazz trumpeters, has been nominated for a Grammy© in the category of Best Latin Jazz Album! This is my fourth Grammy nomination, and comes exactly 10 years after my “Simpático” CD in collaboration with Eddie Palmieri won a Grammy in the same category. It’s the first nomination for my label Hollistic MusicWorks, and a testament to the power of DYI (do it yourself)! It wouldn’t have been possible without the great musicians that participated (my trumpet brothers and others), engineers, video/photo crew and the backers for the Kickstarter project that raised funds for Madera’s publicity campaign. (a tally of some of these wonderful folks is at the bottom of this message)

Receiving a Grammy nomination for this project, which was a real labor of love for me over these last four years, fulfilled my every desire for this recording, or so I thought. I now have to admit to you, and to myself, that now that the project has gotten this far, I’m harboring a little hope that it may go all the way. There’s some other great records by friends and colleagues on the nomination list in my category. But I might dare to believe that, with luck, faith, and continuing to spread the word, Madera Latino may win that Grammy, for myself, the other great artists that joined me on the recording, and for the memory and spirit of my musical hero and the “last of the line”, Woody Shaw.

I’d like to invite you to share in this quest by letting your friends, family and networks know about Madera Latino. Some of you may know voting NARAS members; probably most of you don’t but no matter – if you give this project a little love, I think it will help it spread its wings and fly where it needs to be.

To this end, I invite you to listen to Madera Latino at your leisure via my SoundCloud feed. This link will be live up until Grammy ballots are due in mid January: https://soundcloud.com/hollistic-musicworks/sets/brian-lynch-madera-latino

Four years in the making, Grammy© Award winning trumpeter Brian Lynch’s “Madera Latino” (Latin Wood) project, exploring the music of jazz innovator and master trumpeter Woody Shaw in a Latin Jazz format, is finally ready for release on Hollistic MusicWorks!
The music of the late, great Woody Shaw (1944-1989) – an innovative and highly individual musical lexicon, expressed through both his chosen instrument of trumpet and his equally distinguished compositions – set a standard of excellence and modernity for Black American Music that has not been surpassed in the 50 years since he first came onto the jazz scene. Madera Latino is an exploration of this giant’s music as viewed through the lens of authentic Afro-Caribbean rhythm and framed by the loving treatment of his compositions in virtuosic Latin Jazz style by Grammy© Award winning trumpeter Brian Lynch. It is also a heartfelt tribute to the genius of Woody by a all star lineup of today’s top trumpeters: Lynch, Sean Jones, Dave Douglas, Diego Urcola, Michael Rodriguez, Etienne Charles, Josh Evans, and Philip Dizack.
In trumpet combinations from duo to quartet, these eminent horns explore Shaw classics including In A Capricornian Way, Tomorrow’s Destiny, Zoltan, Song Of Songs, Sweet Love Of Mine, and more, along with two original pieces – one a extended suite – written by Lynch in salute to the profound influence Woody has had on him as a player and composer.
The band for Madera Latino fulfills the promise of Lynch’s audacious concept with élan, precision, and joyous creativity. Percussionists Pedrito Martinez and Little Johnny Rivero, along with bassist Luques Curtis, were integral to the success of Lynch’s 2006 CD Simpático, a Grammy@ Award winner in the Latin Jazz category. Add drummer Obed Calvaire, percussionist Anthony Carrillo, and pianist Zaccai Curtis, and a mighty rhythm section emerges to spur and challenge the trumpeters to their utmost efforts in praise of Shaw.
“The combination of Woody’s music and the Afro-Caribbean clave concept was always a natural to me”,states Lynch. “I’m very happy, after many years of thinking about this idea, to finally be able to actualize this tribute to my musical hero, Woody Shaw, in the distinguished company of these amazing trumpeters and my musical family.”

“I am very proud of what Brian has done with this project, and particularly of the depth of sincerity and the meticulousness with which he has treated the re-interpretation of Woody Shaw’s original works within the Afro-Latino idiom. My respect and gratitude go out to the musicians on this recording for keeping the spirit of this music – and of one of its last great innovators – alive and strong in the 21st century.
